Strong Porter

Strong and hearty porters are of a traditional English style that dominated brewing onwards from the 1700's.

In those days, malt kilning was less consistent and thus all beers tended towards relatively dark hues.

Porters, however, stood out; typically providing an intriguing roasted malt aroma, a deep, dark, rich wood colour and intricate, sturdy flavour.

Never as completely black as stout variations eventually became, a winter porter in particular remains in a class by itself with a robust alcohol content and cleansing hops.

New Zealand's earliest English brewers were proud of the excellence of their porters - and today's examples retain that fine heritage.
